Evernote will begin rate-limiting its developer API from tomorrow

Evernote announced today an important update that applies API rate limits to third-party developer apps. This change will go into effect on August 14, 2013 for non-production API keys, while existing production apps will experience rate-limiting on November 1.

Citing a need to create a “usable, responsive API” that will handle data quickly and ensure that all Evernote-supported applications do their work effectively, rate-limiting is needed. What this means is that apps that connect to the service using the API will find that it can make only a finite number of calls each hour.

The exact limit isn’t set in stone and Evernote says it will be “sufficient” for most users and may be adjusted after its release: “We expect the rate limits to be high enough that reasonable use of the API should not cause an integration to hit the limit.”

Of course there are exceptions to the rule — Evernote says that those clients that sync a user’s entire account will exceed the rate limit and should contact the company to find an appropriate workaround.
