Today New York Mayor Mike Bloomberg has announced that Spotify will heavily expand its presence in New York. The streaming startup will move all of its NY employees into its new headquarters in Chelsea on 6th Avenue later this year.
In addition, Spotify is adding 130 engineers in New York by the end of 2014 — 200 in total. Mayor Bloomberg says this will be Spotify’s largest headquarters outside of Stockholm.
Spotify tells The Next Web that its office will be “several times the size” of its current NY space. The engineers will be working on all of Spotify’s products.
This news follows Spotify’s gradual release of discovery and social features, a process which has taken the Swedish startup quite a while to roll out — the plans were first announced last December.
Meanwhile, Spotify faces growing competition from a number of heavyweights, including Google (with Google Play Music All Access), Apple (with iRadio) and Microsoft (with Xbox Music); that list doesn’t even include longtime competitors Rdio and Deezer.
