Tumblr Creative Director Jacob Bijani leaves after 5 years with the new Yahoo property

Tumblr’s creative director Jacob Bijani is leaving the company. In a blog post, he writes that he will be taking time off to “digest the last few years” and says he has projects already planned for the future, although he wasn’t that specific on the details. He is the most recent departure from Tumblr following its acquisition by Yahoo earlier this month for $1.1 billion.

Bijiani had been at Tumblr for the past five years as one of its early employees. He writes that he joined when the company was a team a four and started as its first designer, creative director, and product engineer. The team quickly took off from there as Tumblr counts around 182 people as employees.

Company founder David Karp once wrote in 2008 about how Bijani got his start with Tumblr. It turns out that Bijani created a theme that caught Karp’s eye and in the summer of 2008, he was asked to help craft more themes for businesses. Soon after that, Bijani was asked to join the company and spent the first months “overhauling the site to accommodate for all the new stuff” that would launch in early 2009.

Bijani writes:

I’m so proud of what we’ve all created together, and it’s been a privilege to contribute to something beloved by so many. I can’t wait to see what’s next for the product; I’m sure it will be nothing short of incredible.

His departure comes after Tumblr became Yahoo’s Instagram moment for $1.1 billion and following the release of ads on the service’s dashboard.
