Financing fitness: Workout app maker VirtuaGym raises $900,000 from Sanoma Ventures

There’s certainly no shortage of fitness applications to assist smartphone owners in getting healthier, but not all of them gain traction.

Enter VirtuaGym, a Dutch maker of personalized workout apps, which says its website and apps are used by over 2.5 million people worldwide.

Sanoma Ventures, the international investment arm of European media company Sanoma, has taken notice of the success of the Amsterdam, The Netherlands-based startup and has pumped $900,000 into the business to support further growth.

VirtuaGym says the additional capital is meant to support its ‘ongoing strong international growth’. Besides its end-user solutions, VirtuaGym offers tools for health clubs and lifestyle coaches, allowing them to use their apps for efficient online coaching.

In addition, VirtuaGym is an open platform that supports third-party products like body weight scales and activity monitors.

Other fitness-related services and apps we’ve covered recently include PumpUp, Fitbit, WeightTraining.com, GymPact, Fitsby and RunKeeper.
