Just in time for your New Year’s resolutions: Meet PumpUp, a personal iOS fitness coach

If you’re committing to losing weight, exercise more or live more healthily in 2013, there are loads of smartphone apps and accessories that can help you achieve your fitness goals.

One that’s launching today is PumpUp, an iOS app that aims to serve as a personal fitness coach, by catering work-outs to any individual user.

PumpUp, the Waterloo, Ontario-based mobile technology startup behind the application, was founded by Garrett Gottlieb and Phil Jacobson in May 2012, and is located in the University of Waterloo’s startup incubator, the VeloCity Garage.

The company says 40% of new gym memberships are cancelled in less than a year, and that what people need most in order to get fitter is adequate guidance and motivation.

By asking a few simple questions about people’s fitness goals, where they want to work out and what equipment they love to use, PumpUp automatically builds a custom workout programs for each user.

Says Jacobson, who serves as CEO of PumpUp:

“We’re simplifying the experience by asking you what you want and taking care of the rest. Getting fit doesn’t have to be tough; people just need to be shown what to do.

With PumpUp, that’s exactly what we’re doing.”

The app itself is free of charge, but PumpUp’s service costs $4.99 per month on an annual subscription, though you can try it free for the first 30 days. Also, to celebrate the launch, an annual subscription for PumpUp is only $2.99 per month until the end of January 2013.

Judging from its website, an Android version is on its way, too.
