Mail delivery firm PostNL buys stake in Dutch mobile couponing startup Scoupy

PostNL, one of the largest mail and parcel delivery firms in The Netherlands, has acquired (blog post in Dutch) a minority stake in mobile couponing startup Scoupy through its subsidary Netwerk VSP.

Founded about a year ago, Scoupy offers free smartphone apps for iOS and Android that give consumers access to roughly 2.500 discounts in local shops, bars, hotels, restaurants and leisure activities in their immediate vicinity.

If you’re wondering why such a venture would interest a post delivery service firm like (publicly-listed) PostNL, the answer is that its Netwerk VSP subsidiary specializes in the distribution of leaflets and other marketing material door-to-door and aims to expand its portfolio of services.

Netwerk VSP also operates Folders.nl, an online and mobile leaflet spreading service if you will, so it makes sense for them to add mobile couponing to the fray.

The Scoupy apps have been downloaded 125.000 times to date.
