WhaleShark Media, an Austin, Texas-based company that aims to create a truly global marketplace for coupons and deals (with backing from Google Ventures, J.P. Morgan and multiple VC firms), has invaded France.
WhaleShark this morning announced that it has purchased Miwim, a French company that operates online coupon site ‘Bons de réduction’, cash-back site Poulpeo and more.
Financial terms of the deal, which involves the transfer of Mivim’s 20 employees, were not disclosed. Mivim founders Olivier David and Francois Larvor will continue to serve as co-General Managers of the French online coupon publishing business.
This isn’t WhaleShark’s first entry in Europe, as it also has operations in Germany (Deals.com) and the UK (VoucherCodes.co.uk).
According to the company, acquiring Mivim enables it to provide coupons to consumers that represent 70 percent of the ecommerce activity in Western Europe.
The WhaleShark Media portfolio of coupon and deal websites also includes RetailMeNot.com, Deals2Buy.com, CouponSeven.com and CouponShare.com.
The company is backed by over $300 million in funding from firms like Austin Ventures, Norwest Venture Partners, Adams Street Partners, Google Ventures, J.P. Morgan Asset Management and Institutional Venture Partners.
