OZON, the ‘Amazon of Russia’, grew revenues 84% last year to over $300m

Russian Internet commerce powerhouse The OZON Group this morning announced its financial results for 2011, and they’re promising.

The company, which operates Amazon.com-like ecommerce site OZON.ru as well as online shoe store Sapato, delivery service O’Courier and digital travel agency OZON.travel, reached a $302.5 million turnover last year.

In this “benchmark year”, OZON reached the milestone of $1 million in revenue per day. The revenue figures shared by the company this morning include gross merchandise value and gross bookings, and do not yet include revenues from Zappos clone Sapato, which it acquired earlier this year.

Compared to 2010, OZON grew revenues an impressive 84 percent. Overall, the online retailer shipped 2.42 million orders to its customers in 2011.

Combined, OZON.ru and OZON.travel boast more than 6.5 million registered users, with monthly traffic exceeding 15 million visitors per month.

With those kind of numbers, investors looking to get in on the action (it helps that Russia’s Internet economy is relatively young, booming and projected to grow eerily fast) are never hard to find and convince.

Back in September 2011, OZON raised $100 million in venture funding from – among others – ru-Net, Index Ventures and Japanese online retailer Rakuten.

The OZON Group was originally founded in 1998.
