Hearst joins Time inc. in making Subscription deal with Apple

Hearst inc., publisher of the iPad magazines Esquire, Popular Mechanics and O, has reached a deal with Apple to offer subscriptions for those publications and likely future ones reports the Wall Street Journal.

The news, also reported on by Macstories, comes just a couple of days after Time inc. revealed that it had also reached a deal with Apple to make all of it’s iPad magazines free for print subscribers. These deals coming so quickly one after another indicates that many publishers may soon be joining in their support of Apple’s subscription plans.

Interestingly, Time plans to offer the iPad editions to all of it’s print subscribers free of charge, implying that it is eating the 30% surcharge for new subscribers that it gains via the iPad. Offering the digital editions free does sidestep the ongoing percentages that Apple would garner from the monthly fees.

Hearst’s iPad publications will be offered on a monthly subscription bases for $1.99 or yearly for $19.99.
