Microsoft launches Marketplace and Windows Phone 7.5 devices in India

Microsoft launches Marketplace and Windows Phone 7.5 devices in India

Microsoft launched several Windows Phone 7.5 devices during an event in New Delhi today, bringing the Marketplace to India for the first time, according to a report by WinRumors.

Bhaskar Paramanik, the chairman of Microsoft India, announced the upcoming availability of the HTC Radar in India starting from next week and Acer Allegro and Samsung Omnia W in November this year.

The HTC Radar will feature a 3.8-inch WVGA SLCD screen, 1GHz processor, 8GB of storage, 512MB of RAM, and a 5-megapixel rear camera (with a front-facing VGA counterpart). It will be priced at ₹ 23,990 ($485) in the Indian market.

The company boasted of having over 30,000 apps and over 50,000 registered developers in the Marketplace. It said that some new India-focused apps were going to be launched as well, with the Indian newspaper Times of India and deals website SnapDeal leading the charge.

Update: The post has been updated to reflect that today marked the official release of the Marketplace in India. Windows Phone 7 devices had existed in the country before. We regret the error and thank Pradeep Viswanathan of HCL for pointing it out.
