Google Maps for Android update makes it easier to choose a restaurant

Google Maps is improving its ‘Explore’ feature on Android. Starting today, it’ll be easier to discover some of the best restaurants in your area through the app.

If you head on over to the Explore section of the Maps app, you’ll be able to pick from a variety of categories that fit your needs and occasions. For instance, the app will be able to shoot out suggestions for ‘lunch nearby’ or ‘mission-style Mexican food.’

Once you choose a category, Maps will delve deeper into the specifics for each location, including photos, ratings and reviews. Explore will also tell you if a restaurant is good for a quick bite, and if they can accommodate large parties

Recommendations will also be pushed to you depending on choices from other users who’ve eaten at places you’ve been to before.

If you’re in NYC, San Francisco or London, Google goes a step further, actually providing human-curated recommendations for whatever neighborhood you happen to be in. You can still expand outside of Google’s choices by clicking on a ‘view more’ option.

The update is rolling out to Android users today. No word on iOS support yet, but we imagine it’s only a matter of time.
