Softcard is shutting down on March 31 and will be replaced by Google Wallet

Google announced at the end of last month that it had acquired the technology behind mobile payments app, Softcard. Now that company, which is owned by Verizon Wireless, AT&T, and T-Mobile, is shutting down.

Softcard has announced on its website that its app will stop working on March 31 and will be replaced by Google Wallet. It’s not a surprise as Google also signed a deal with the carriers to preinstall its app on their Android devices.

The statement from Softcard says:

We are pleased to let you know that Google has acquired technology from Softcard to power the next generation of mobile wallets. What does that mean for you? As of 3/31 your Softcard app will no longer work. You can continue to use the Softcard app until 3/31. After that your Account will be closed.

Sadly, the news also means Softcard’s disturbing mascot Tappy has also been put out to pasture.
