Google’s indoor maps arrive in India so you don’t get lost in shopping malls

Google’s indoor maps arrive in India so you don’t get lost in shopping malls

Google has brought indoor maps to India. In an announcement, the company says that starting today, users across 22 cities in India can access Google’s maps for 75 popular indoor venues — including venues such as Ambience Mall in Gurgaon and Select City Walk in Delhi.

The maps automatically appear when you zoom in on a location, and fade away when the map is zoomed out. This comes as Google notes that “many malls in India are evolving from standard shopping destinations to fully equipped entertainment hubs packed with shops, restaurants, theaters and even gaming zones” — so Google wants its maps to be useful even when you’re not pounding the streets.

In certain indoor venues, Google has also adopted the location technology developed for My Location — previously only available outdoors — so this means the map will automatically update to display which floor you’re on when you move up or down a level in a building. With this feature, users can also access indoor walking directions to get to your destination more quickly.
