Google Hangouts gets tweaked for the workplace, now shows global directory, updated settings, and better support

Google is rolling out new features for Hangouts that will make it easier to use in the workplace. Joining the full-screen video chat capability unveiled last month, Google has added support for the Global Address List, updated its settings screen, and offer the same level of support that for Hangouts that it does for its Talk product. These features are available for those companies using Google Apps.

With the Global Address List, employees can choose anyone in their organization. All recent conversations will sit at the top of the Hangouts list and by typing the first letter of a colleague will populate the name in the list.

Settings have also been updated so that administrators can control what features employees can manage themselves. Hangouts can be limited to be between those inside the organization, be completely “off-the-record”, or allow others outside the company to have Hangouts with employees. Google says that video and audio chat functionality can also be turned off across the entire organization.

Lastly, Google Apps users will receive the same level of support that they currently get for Google Talk, including 24/7 support.
