Google launches its own Newsstand for Android, replacing Play Magazines and Currents

Google has launched Google Play Newsstand, an Android app that combines its previous Play Magazines and elements of its Google Currents app into one.

The Newsstand app will play home to around 2,000 publications like The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, Esquire, Elle, Vanity Fair, People, Wired, The Guardian and many, many more all in one place. Naturally, they’re formatted nicely for mobile consumption too.

As well as including traditional magazines and newspapers, the app also includes content from blogs and other news sites.

Users of the existing Google Play Magazines app (that’s the UK, US, Canada and Australia) should see the update rolling out and replacing the existing app in the next few days, everyone else can go ahead and download it now. Currents users can go ahead and upgrade by installing the new app.

It’s worth noting that Apple’s own Newsstand app carries exactly the same name, which could well get confusing quickly.
