Be careful: Google Talk and Hangouts are sending some messages to the wrong recipients

Google’s Talk/Hangouts platform is reportedly suffering from quite the privacy issue today, with many users reporting that the chat client has been sending chats to the wrong people.

Somewhat alarmingly, the issue seems to be affecting both users that have and haven’t upgraded to the newer Hangouts version of the chat service and according to some Twitter users is sending on chats to the unintended recipients not only via Google Talk, but also via email.

Google, which has acknowledged via its Service Status Dashboard page that it is looking into an issue with Google Talk.

A Google spokesperson got in touch to say:

“There was an issue today that affected some people using Google’s instant messaging services. We have since identified the problem, stopped it from recurring, and are currently working on a fix. We’re very sorry to anyone affected. For further updates please refer to the Apps Status Dashboard.”
