Google Glass update brings more Now cards, voice commands for third-party services, and video player controls

Google today announced the latest monthly update (XE8) to its Glass project, adding a slew of new features to those lucky few with the devices sitting on their noses. Among the additions are more Google Now cards, voice commands for third-party apps, and video player controls.

First of all, Google Now has gotten a big bump in new functionality:

  • Restaurants, hotels, events – Be reminded of dinner reservations, hotel bookings and concerts. You’ll see these reminders for places that sent you an email confirmation.
  • Movies – Find showtimes and movie information for nearby theaters.
  • Emergency alerts – Change your plans on the fly when severe thunderstorm or flash flood warnings are in effect.
  • Traffic – Get traffic conditions and alternate routes before you leave for work.
  • Weather – Know how to dress before stepping out the door.
  • Sports – See live scores for your favorite teams.

Next up are voice commands, and we’re not just talking about new ones like those that were added in last month’s update. Glass users can now add voice commands from other services to the main menu, meaning Google is slowly expanding Glass to even more third-party options.

This month, Google is introducing two new voice commands: “Post an update” (first supported by Path) and “Take a note” (first supported by Evernote). Furthermore, the company notes more is coming but won’t say exactly what: Glass users will soon be able to use their voice “to trigger all sorts of services.”

Last but certainly not least, the video player now lets you tap to pause or play, as well as swipe to fast forward or rewind. Those controls probably should have been there from the start, but they’re finally here now.
