Nissan reveals its own autonomous driving technology — a self-driving chair

Nissan’s ProPILOT technology could one day power a fleet of self-driving cars. Today, it’s powering a chair.

The self-propelling chair detects surrounding chairs and moves patrons through lines in a predefined path. It’s probably not the most exciting use of autonomous technology — unless you just can’t stand waiting in line — but it’s certainly got utility.

Unfortunately for us in the US, the chair is only going to see the light of day in Japan, at least for now. Between now and December 27, the automaker is seeking applications for restaurants interested in providing these for customers waiting in line. Those chosen will be outfitted with the autonomous tech in 2017.
