Canonical cuts the price of the Ubuntu Edge to $695 for the remainder of its Indiegogo campaign

Canonical cuts the price of the Ubuntu Edge to $695 for the remainder of its Indiegogo campaign

Canonical is slashing the price of its Ubuntu Edge smartphone to $695 in a bid to accelerate the number of pledges needed to reach its ambitious $32 million crowdfunding target on Indiegogo. Until now, the device has been available in limited quantities at a number of different price points, starting at $600 and rising to $775 up until today.

That new price tag will be fixed until the end of the campaign, so Ubuntu fans no longer need to worry about missing out on one of the company’s previously limited-quantity backer tiers. Backers who have pledged more than $695 for the handset will be refunded the difference, should Canonical raise the $32 million by August 21.

Canonical is off the pace to reach its ambitious target right now, although Bloomberg LP snapped up the first of its $80,000 enterprise bundles yesterday. It’s a still long shot, but the chances of Canonical actually completing the campaign and producing the device have just been improved, albeit ever so slightly.
