Sony is celebrating passing the 70 million unit milestone for its PlayStation 3 console as it approaches the six year anniversary of the machine’s release. The company also noted that it had surpassed 15 million sales of the device’s Move Motion controller, which was released in 2010.
The PS3 has gone through several revisions during its lifespan, including another slimming down earlier this fall. The PlayStation Network, which launched alongside the PS3, now features 170,000 downloadable digital content and 57,000 game content. Sony also recently revamped its PlayStation Store with a new interface.
The PS3 may have been on sale for 6 years, but it still has one frontier to reach: China. The Chinese government doesn’t approve game consoles for sale in the country, but the PS3 has received at least one of the certifications it needs to arrive in the country. However, to be fully cleared for sale, China would still have to repeal its gaming ban.
Not to rain on Sony’s parade, but the PS3 is a bit behind in the console wars. Microsoft hit the 70 million mark in September of this year, while Nintendo hit almost 100 million total worldwide sales at the end of the third quarter.
