Amazon has announced the release of a “Send to Kindle for Google Chrome” extension for Google’s web browser and has promised that support for the Firefox and Safari browsers is coming soon.

The new extension (via The Verge) sends Web content such as articles, blog posts and text selections straight to one or more Kindle devices or Kindle reading apps while stripping out “the distractions.” Amazon’s Whispersync service will keep track of notes, highlights, bookmarks and the last page read, though it won’t work for PDFs.

The feature is free over Wi-Fi, but users should keep in mind that Amazon will charge for transfers over its Whispernet.

Browser extensions for sending content to Kindles have existed for a while, but this looks to be the first official one from Amazon. Send to Kindle for PC and Mac arrived earlier this year
