Facebook is currently down for many users around the world [Update: It’s back]

Facebook currently seems to be inaccessible for many people according to a barrage of tweets and posts to other social media sites.

The problems first seemed to start just before 17:00 BST (midday Eastern Time), and naturally, people wasted no time in taking to Twitter. Uptime monitoring services like Downrightnow.com and downforeveryoneorjustme are also showing likely service trouble.

How long will it last? Who knows, but we’ve asked the company for an update on the situation. An outage as widespread as this seems to rarely go on too long.

Some users are also reporting that Instagram is inaccessible, but it seems to be working for us on iOS and the Web at the moment.

Update 17:45BST: A spokesperson for Facebook got in touch with the following statement:

We’re aware that some people are currently having trouble accessing Facebook. We’re working to get things back to normal as quickly as possible.

Judging from reports on social media, and the TNW team, access seems to be gradually returning.

Update: Facebook sent TNW the following statement about today’s outage:

Earlier this morning, some people had trouble accessing Facebook for a short time. We quickly investigated and have fully restored service for everyone. We’re sorry for the inconvenience.
