Thought those Social Media Manager listings sound like a cushy way to get paid for surfing? Think again! This infographic from Socialcast proves that the Social Media Manager’s job is a hard one. Or it would be, if not for the expensive Aeron chair every startup seems to buy their employees.
The infographic isn’t without its problems, though. According to the image, 6% of Social Media Managers claim 10-19 years of experience, with a further 1% claiming 20+ years of experience. Social media as we apply the term didn’t exist that long ago. To those of you who like to stretch the truth a bit in resumes, at least try to be believable when you lie!

Depending on how many filled out the survey, 19 or 20 years is easily possible. If you’re defining Social Media, (which has existed since cave pictures), more as Computer Mediated Communications manager, in 1991 CompuServe was still plenty active with hundreds of moderators and Prodigy Services company was starting to grow. The term Social Media may not have existed, but there were plenty of online community moderators, both interest based and commercially oriented. Of course, this doesn’t mean that people didn’t check the wrong box on the survey. And sure, things are more sophisticated and varied now, but it’s quite possible. Just as you could have a web developer with over 15 years experience. Just as people did SEO before it became an acronym, and so on.
