Flickr apps overhauled with new look and features for editing images and adding filters [updated]

Yahoo today launched a major update for its Flickr photo app on iOS and Android, bringing a completely overhauled and redesigned look to the table, as well as a few new features.

As well as re-engineering and redesigning large elements of the app for both platforms, the team said it has also made it easier to take photos and videos from within the app and added advanced editing options for your images, like a plethora of Instagram-like filters and image enhancement tools.

There’s also now the option to capture up to 30 seconds of HD video with live filters applied.

Bringing it in line with other photo apps, Flickr’s mobile apps also now have an auto-sync feature for backing up original quality photos from your handset’s camera roll to your Flickr account.

And once stored in your account, the company promises that its new search feature that automatically knows where and when a photo was taken (as well as being able to automatically recognize and tag objects like a ‘car’ or ‘sunset’) will make finding the photo you’re looking for a breeze.

Another change for the app, and perhaps less of a welcome one for some users, is that you now have to sign in to the Flickr Android app using a Yahoo account. You could previously use a Facebook or Google account, as well as Yahoo.

The overhaul is a more drastic measure for Android users – bringing with it a fresh UI as well as new features – but the additional changes, especially the auto-sync and HD video capture options will be welcomed by iOS users too. The Android update is live now, and the iOS version is scheduled to go live on the App Store at some point today.
