Foxconn chief confirms Taiwan expansion across three cities in 2013

Foxconn chairman Terry Guo has indicated that his company is planning to prioritize investments in Taiwan as it expands this year, as noted by DigiTimes.

Guo reportedly confirmed the plans at a company event. The expansion will take place in New Taipei, Taichung and Kaohsiung, and the manufacturer will also turn its attention to developing local talent this year.

Foxconn, also known as Hon Hai Precision Industry, is based in Taiwan, but it is more famously known for its operations in mainland China. It has made a name for itself as a contract manufacturer, and has taken on most major electronics brands as its clients.

Foxconn has also begun expanding beyond Greater China. It has been investing heavily on production facilities in Brazil with plans to create over 10,000 jobs in the emerging market. The company is also planning to increase operations in the US to as its customers pursue “Made in America” strategies.

Meanwhile, Foxconn’s plans to invest as much as $10 billion in facilities in Indonesia were said to have run up against regulatory difficulties. A government official said late last year that the project had been delayed by around three to six months while discussions continued.

As of last December, Foxconn had 1.6 million workers around the world, most of which are based in China.
