Microsoft could finally show the world its universal Xbox apps next month

It’s been a while since we first heard about Universal Windows 10 apps for Xbox – apps that can run on anything from your console to your phone to your computer – but it looks like they’re finally ready to make their debut at Microsoft’s Build event later this month.

Phil Spencer, Head of Xbox, tweeted earlier that the Xbox team would discuss its “next steps with the Universal Windows Platform” later in the month.

And while that’s somewhat vaguely phrased, The Verge is reporting that Microsoft will “detail a number of apps” as well as show off “plans to open the platform to developers.”

In more practical terms, that means we can soon expect developers to be able to create apps with the similar functionality across Windows devices, including games.

Depending on how tight the integration is, you would theoretically be able to play the same titles on your PC, phone and Xbox, and perhaps even be able to start playing a game on your Xbox and finish it on your mobile device.

In any case, Build runs from March 30 to April 1, so expect a lot more news come showtime.
