WhoSampled + Spotify = a fascinating new way to explore music on iOS

WhoSampled + Spotify = a fascinating new way to explore music on iOS

WhoSampled has been around for years now, as a service dedicated to mapping which songs contain samples of other songs. So, if you search for Ice Ice Baby by Vanilla Ice, you’ll see that it sampled Under Pressure by David Bowie & Queen (as if you didn’t know), but the WhoSampled goes way more deep and obscure than that.

The WhoSampled iOS app has received an upgrade this week with the addition of Spotify integration. That means that you can hear exactly how, for example, Stylo by Gorillaz incorporated a hook from an Eddy Grant song, or how Beck reworked an old Herbie Hancock baseline in his track Cellphone’s Dead.

My favorite sampling fact of all time: Voodoo Ray samples Derek & Clive.

The app already included YouTube videos, but Spotify’s library helps fill out the catalog, and the app scans your Spotify account and highlights songs in your collection that you may be interested in finding out more about. You can search for any song you like, however.

It’s a fascinating way to explore the world of samples, especially if you’re a real music geek who loves to know how your favorite tracks were put together. Spotify will be added to WhoSampled’s Android app later this year.
