One of the worst things about Netflix is getting pumped to watch a new show or movie only to find out it’s not available in your country. Generally, it’s been pretty easy to get around that restriction using a proxy, but soon things might get a bit more complicated.
Netflix today announced in a blog post that its security measures are going to improve over the “coming weeks” to appease disgruntled content owners. It will employ standard proxy and ‘unblocker’ detection to “respect and enforce content licensing by geographic location”.
Nonetheless, the post reads somewhat apologetically. It opens saying if it could make all its content available globally “there wouldn’t be a reason for members to use proxies,” and emphasizes the company’s continued efforts to make that happen throughout the 190 countries it currently serves.
If you’re a regular Netflix user – AKA not sneaking shows in via a proxy – this change should have no effect for you.
