In our mass-produced, plasticized world, having something made by hand is becoming a rare commodity. Etsy has cleverly tapped into this desire for craftsmanship, boosting the popularity and value of artisans with its online shopping platform.
Now, Etsy announced it is extending the listings for its Etsy Local service to its iOS and Android apps so people can pinpoint Etsy sellers on the go. Etsy Local has been part of the company’s Web site and easily accessible from the browser. The same information is now available directly from the mobile app.
So. Much. Tech.
Some of the biggest names in tech are coming to TNW Conference in Amsterdam this May.
Etsy Local appears as a separate tab on the mobile app’s home page. When you tap on it, it shows you a map of your local area dotted with all of the Etsy sellers that are available now, in the near future, or in the recent past. It’s a nice way to get oriented to where sellers may be while you are nearby. It also gives you an idea of which stores routinely carry Etsy merchandise.
Etsy sellers can add craft fairs, farmers’ markets and special events they will be participating in, while some retail members of Etsy Wholesale can have their physical stores included on Etsy Local, according to a blog post announcing the update.
Etsy Local listings include hours of operation, images of available items and more. You can access local Etsy merchandise and stores from wherever you are, even if you’re not at home. Tapping on the marker on the iPhone lets you choose either Apple Maps or Google Maps.
The app automatically recommends retailers or events based on taste, previously visited shops or sellers singled out via favorites, purchases or browsing. If, like me, you have not done much shopping online at Etsy, the app will help you discover new places to shop by viewing local boutiques that carry Etsy merchandise.
