MTV is launching two new streaming TV and music apps in Europe next month

MTV is teaming up with leading mobile operators to give users access to its vast content library on the go with the launch of two new apps next month – MTV Play and MTV Trax.

MTV Play is a video on demand service that will feature many of MTV’s most popular shows. It will launch on March 5 in Germany, Switzerland and Romania giving users access to more than 1,500 hours of MTV’s TV content, as well as some advance previews.

MTV has partnered with Dutch multi-platform innovator Vigour for this app and as a result, users of the MTV Play app will be able to switch between devices while watching videos by ‘flicking’ content between the app and other screens.

Anyone who has subscribed to an MTV Mobile branded tariff in these countries will get free access to MTV Play, while everyone else in those countries will be able to directly access app’s content for €2.99 per month or €29.99 for the year.

MTV Trax is a subscription based music streaming service that is aimed at casual music fans who MTV say may be “put off by the higher price tariffs and complexity of ‘all you can eat’ streaming services.”

Trax will offer users content that is specifically curated by MTV and updated daily, such as top rated playlists and tracks of the moment. It will also let you listen to music offline, which will undoubtedly be appealing to anyone with a restrictive data plan

The app is set to launch on March 3 in the UK and will be available for download on iOS, Android and in the Windows Phone Store.

MTV Trax  is also due to launch in New Zealand later in the year, in partnership with a “leading network operator,” according to MTV. Pricing information for subscription has not yet been made available.
