Social TV service TVtag pulls the plug

Social TV service TVtag pulls the plug

Once upon a time the second-screen experience was expected to rule the living room. That actually didn’t come to pass and today we’re seeing a casualty of that bright future that never was.

TVtag has informed its users via email and on its site that it will be shutting down on January 1, 2015 and that its mobile apps will cease to function. TVtag — which was originally called GetGlue — let users check in to shows they were watching to earn stickers. Like Foursquare for watching TV shows.

Gigaom reports that after a failed acquisition and name change, many users were unhappy with the service.

Users have been instructed to email the company if they want to save their TVtag data.
