Chat app Yik Yak adds a map to let you browse anonymous conversations around the world

Yik Yak, an anonymous chat app that has gained popularity among the college set, lets you track, view and contribute to conversations and posts without having to divulge personal information. An update, released today, adds a new mapping feature to the app’s Peek function that makes it easier to view posts in far-flung locations.

The update lets users “peek” into any local area worldwide by dropping a pin on a map and viewing that location’s current Yik Yak feed.

The company considers the ability to monitor and view posts in specific locations important for tracking local breaking news or sports. The new Peek Anywhere feature, which augments Twitter feeds, news outlets and other information sources, is designed to give users the local scoop on fast-moving events, the company says.

Once you click on the Yik Yak Peek tab, you will be able to select the Search icon and type in a location or drag the pin along a map to view activity in that area. The app also allows users to save locations in their Peek section.

As a self-described hyper-local chat app, Yik Yak uses GPS location data to connect participants within a 1.5 mile radius.

Yik Yak has seen its share of controversy, especially because anonymous postings have led to cyberbullying among younger users. The company, in response, now employs geo-fencing to cut off access to the app for middle school and high school students.

Yik Yak is available free for iOS and Android.
