Al Jazeera launches ‘AJ+’ iOS and Android apps for its mobile-first news platform

Al Jazeera, traditionally known for being a television news organization, has today launched its first apps for its mobile-first news platform called AJ+ in a bid to better engage its audiences on a range of different devices.

Available today for iOS and Android (provided you’re happy to join the beta program), the platform arranges content into different types of ‘cards’. So, Video cards provides new in video form, naturally, and Art cards use an infographic style to display news updates, for example.

The Conversation and Debate cards are home to conversations about broad questions and allow the AJ+ community to have their say on a range of topics and there’s even a Quiz cards section that features an interactive Q&A about a current news topic, so you can see exactly how informed you really are.

Cards are then organized into collections called ‘Stacks,’ which the company says makes it easier for people to dig deeper for information on the topics important to them.

Of course, the push isn’t just to make Al Jazeera’s news more palatable for mobile users, it’s a bid to drive more interaction with a younger demographic, that might perhaps otherwise not engage with traditional news organizations.
