Mobile dating app Tinder will introduce verified accounts for lovelorn celebrities

It’s quite possibly the perfect example of the ‘first world problems‘ meme. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Tinder CEO Sean Rad revealed the mobile dating app would soon be updated with a verification program.

Why? Apparently, celebrities are being shot down on the service because most of its users simply assume their accounts are fake. While Tinder requires new users to prove their identity with a Facebook account, it’s ineffective when celebrities are using Zuckerberg’s social network under a fake name.

“This will allow celebrities to enter Tinder in a different way,” Rad said.

It’s not clear when the feature will be implemented, but it’s unlikely to affect the large majority of its users. The probability that you’ll pass a star on the street is fairly slim – unless you live in Los Angeles – and unless you’re already a celebrity, the chances of being verified on Tinder will probably be very low. Regardless, it’s an important update for the app and could trigger a broader wave of verified accounts in the future, similar to Twitter.
