The New York Times has today cut the number of free articles in its mobile apps from three per day to just 10 per month.
The company said the move was being made to keep access given to visitors via the apps in line with the number of free articles offered to visitors to the NYTimes.com homepage and its mobile website. The 10 articles can be plucked from the more than 25 different sections, blogs and slideshows. Once these 10 stories have been used, the user will be asked to subscribe in order to carry on reading.
The decision to bring mobile app visitors in line with the desktop and mobile website comes just a few weeks after a major redesign of the homepage went live for the first time, however, it’ll likely come as a blow to non-subscribers that had gotten used to having three free articles per day. The new limit applies across the board to the company’s iOS, Android, Windows Phone 7.5 and BlackBerry 10 apps.
