Pebble has announced a significant update to its iOS app to include full integration with Apple’s Notification Center in iOS 7, allowing you to get notifications on your watch from third-party apps like Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. The update is currently under review by Apple and is expected to arrive in the App Store soon.
When the update arrives, Pebbles will also use Bluetooth Low Energy to receive notifications from iOS devices. Classic Bluetooth will be used for larger tasks like firmware updates.
The company also revealed that it has shipped more than 190,000 smartwatches to customers. Pebble users have downloaded over 2 million watch apps and faces, and there are now more than 50 companion apps in the App Store and Google Play.
Adding full support for iOS 7 notifications should bring loads of value for Pebble owners. Previously, it only supported a limited set of notifications, such as calls, messages and emails. Much of the original crowdfunding support for Pebble was in anticipation of the smartwatch’s potential after release, so it’s nice to see the company pushing out new features to both the iOS app and its SDK.
