Instagram for Windows Phone is finally official: Will arrive in the ‘coming weeks’

During Nokia’s Lumia tablet and smartphone event in Abu Dhabi today, Instagram CEO and co-founder Kevin Systrom revealed the app most Windows Phone users have been eagerly waiting for is finally coming. When? An exact date wasn’t given; all we know is Instagram will arrive in the “coming weeks,” so it’s safe to say it will be here by the end of the year.

“Our ultimate goal is to bring Instagram to everyone who wants to use it,” Systrom announced. “We’re looking forward to watching the Windows Phone community use Instagram to capture and share beautiful moments in the coming weeks.”

Many consider Instagram to be the most important app that Windows Phone still doesn’t have. Now that we know Facebook gave the green light for Instagram to dedicate resources to Windows Phone, Microsoft’s mobile platform has received a huge blessing.

The biggest company to lose out here is of course BlackBerry. For months now, Microsoft has been touting that its platform is third to Android and iOS, and market share figures regularly support this claim. In many people’s eyes, including Facebook’s and Instagram’s, it’s now the reality.

Nokia’s Windows Phone events have become big opportunities for Windows Phone developers to piggyback their app launches; for example, when Nokia unveiled its Lumia 1020 smartphone three months ago, Path, Vine, Flipboard, and Hipstamatic Oggl were all confirmed. Today, Nokia listed the following new apps are still coming in addition to Instagram and Vine: ESPN F1, EA SPORTS FIFA 14, My Talking Tom, Papyrus, Temple Run 2, Vyclone Pro, and Xbox Video. With Instagram finally onboard, how many more big names will follow?
