Rdio updates iPhone app with attractive album and playlist views and social integration

Rdio has refreshed its iPhone app with an attractive new look for its song list view and also implemented new social integration that lets users see what their friends have been listening to from the list view.

The new look continues Rdio’s ongoing redesign of its app to give it a modern interface in a series of updates this year. The revised app offers up a new slick album song list view where the UI steps out of the way and lets the art and song titles speak for themselves.

Rdio has also brought the social integration from its Web and desktop apps to the iOS version. Users should now be able to see which albums their friends are listening to in the list view. I wasn’t able to find this feature in the app, but the problem might be a lack of friends on my end.

The company’s iOS app got a significant update last month, the first of the series, that added long-press actions and badges.

Streaming music services are currently in a tense battle for mobile listeners around the world, and the design of their respective apps is an important part of the competition. Pandora recently announced substantial growth in mobile revenue and listener hours, while also revealing that its CEO will step down. Rdio launched its free music streaming service internationally in January, and it will likely be met with a challenge from Spotify, which is said to be finalizing negotiations to take its own free mobile radio service overseas.
