Flickr for iOS gets faster uploading, new social and backup features in app update

Continuing to rapidly update its revamped iOS application, Yahoo’s Flickr team have pushed live a new update for the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch, incorporating faster uploads, photo backups, better tagging and notifications, and more.

Following today’s update, Yahoo has made it easier to save photos posted to your Photostream and store them in your Camera Roll, while ensuring that the app now saves an unedited version of your photo after you apply effects or filters to it.

The new Flickr app has also been given a minor social upgrade, supporting @username mentions in comments to tag your friends and family when posting new photos. You’ll be able to tag people, and they will be able to do the same — the app will now alert you when they do.

Yahoo has also enhanced the quality of photos in the lightbox view, while incorporating support for the volume up button when snapping photos (much like the default Camera.app).

Enjoying some increased usage when Facebook-owned Instagram changed its terms of service, Flickr has adopted many of the features included in its rival’s app. The inclusion of username tagging is reminiscent of how Instagram allows its users to include references to usernames in a photo’s comments, as is the option that automatically saves the original version of a filtered image.

Flickr still has some way to go to even begin worrying Facebook, but improvements are coming thick and fast. Marissa Mayer’s mobile-first strategy (and the recent overhaul of Yahoo.com) is beginning to bear fruit.
