Now at 90 million users, free calling app Viber adds group messaging feature

Viber Media, the Israeli company building a cross-platform mobile communications suite for smartphones, says it has attracted over 90 million users making over 1.5 billion minutes of free calls and sending over 2 billion text messages every month.

Today, the Viber app for iPhone and Android, as well as its beta BlackBerry app, is getting an upgrade to version 2.2. Its Windows Phone app wasn’t invited to the party, it appears.

The most noteworthy new feature in the new version is group messaging.

With the addition of group texting capability, Viber isn’t challenging services like Skype, iMessage and WhatsApp anymore, but also group messaging tools like GroupMe, CloudTalk, Celly, textPlus and Reach Alert, among others.

Other improvements in Viber 2.2 include better call quality across platforms and various user interface enhancements.
