YouTube to Begin Live Sports Coverage
Google and Cricket’s IPL (India Premier League) have announced an agreement that will stream Cricket’s most prestigious annual tournament across the web to a worldwide audience.
From March, 60 matches will be shown and YouTube are on the lookout for a global sponsor as well as local ones.
While this is the first sports event YouTube has agreed to broadcast, YouTube has streamed live concerts before, namely U2’s in October which had 10million viewers worldwide.
Bruce Daisley, Google UK’s leader for YouTube told Marketing Magazine: “We’re keen to see how the community will take to live sport. There’s a real interest in live events, so we’re excited.”
As a commenter rightly points out, it’s a win-win solution for both parties involved, it will increase exposure to sports unable to achieve international tv deals but will also open peoples eyes to the potential for YouTube far more than a simple video sharing site. Both parties are likely to win on the sponsorship deals front.
How long before we see live football, tennis etc..?
