Test the iPhone 7 Plus’s awesome portrait mode with iOS 10.1

Test the iPhone 7 Plus’s awesome portrait mode with iOS 10.1

iOS 10.1 was just released as a public beta, including the first opportunity for the general public to try the iPhone 7’s best camera feature.

Only available on the large iPhone 7, the new ‘Portrait’ mode copies Huawei and HTC, using the the dual lens set up to calculate depth and artificially add some background blur (also known as bokeh) to your portraits. This helps isolate your subjects from busy backgrounds and make your photos look more like they were shot on a DSLR or mirrorless camera.

Though Apple said it would be available for everyone ‘later this year,’ the public beta gives you early access for free. Based on the samples I’ve seen so far, it’s not anywhere as realistic as an actual DSLR, but it might be good enough for the average user not to notice. You can read more about how the iPhone 7 cameras here, and MacRumors has a good demo below:

If you haven’t already, you can sign up for the public beta over on Apple’s beta program page.
