iPad Air and Retina iPad mini drive biggest ever day for iPad resales at gadget trade-in site Gazelle

iPad Air and Retina iPad mini drive biggest ever day for iPad resales at gadget trade-in site Gazelle

Resale site Gazelle today revealed that yesterday’s iPad Air and iPad mini with Retina display announcement drove the biggest iPad day for its business to date. In other words, Apple users are getting ready to buy the new iPads by getting rid of their old devices.

In fact, Gazelle says the day’s announcements also simultaneously resulted in Gazelle’s largest computer day ever. That shouldn’t be too much of a surprise, given that most people don’t organize around one day to sell their various desktops, laptops, and tablets from different manufactures.

What is interesting, however, is the iPad specific data:

  • Gazelle’s iPad offers nearly doubled those made on the day of last year’s Fall iPad announcement.
  • 66 percent of iPad trades made yesterday were for iPads that Apple debuted in 2012.

Here’s the full breakdown Gazelle provided on a per-iPad basis:

iPad iPad 2 iPad 3 iPad 4 iPad Mini
Last Year (10/23/12) 12 percent 21 percent 67 percent N/A N/A
This Year (10/22/13) 8 percent 26 percent 31 percent 13 percent 22 percent

Unsurprisingly, every type of iPad is on sale. The new iPad Air name and the significant screen resolution bump on the iPad mini with Retina are getting Apple users excited.

The fact that the former hasn’t dropped in price while the latter has increased means Apple users need to search their pockets for extra change. Selling off old hardware seems like a perfect place to start.

The iPad Air ships on November 1 in 41 countries while the iPad mini with Retina ships later in November, with exact timing and country details yet to be announced. Apple users of course want to get rid of their old products before then, as prices for their used devices are only going to fall further and further.
