Apple has managed to garner 17% of the overall PC market due to its record sales of iPads and Macs in Q4 2011, reports Canalys. The 15 million iPads and 5 million Macs sold worldwide during the quarter has made Apple the number one vendor of personal computers.
The fact that vendors other than Apple didn’t ship any tablets in volume was seen as the big difference maker. “Currently, HP is pursuing a Windows strategy for its pad portfolio, producing enterprise-focused products, such as the recently launched Slate 2, until the launch of Windows 8,” said Canalys Analyst Tim Coulling.
The market, which is comprised of some 120 million PCs shipped worldwide in Q4, was up 16% since last year due to the inclusion of tablets. If you exclude tablet sales (basically the iPad, as few other tablets had any major impact on the market) the market actually fell .4%. This makes the iPad responsible for Apple’s growth, but also for any positive growth at all in PCs.
Another way you can read this data is that tablets are in fact replacing a good chunk of the market for PCs. The difference between PC market growth overall and the growth of the tablet market will only continue to grow as more customers decide that a tablet is enough for what they want to do.
As Coulling says, the onus is now on Microsoft to produce a ‘less resource intensive’ and intuitive experience for tablet users. The other vendors in the top 5 had a mostly down quarter, with Acer, Dell and HP all losing shares and only Lenovo turning in growth numbers. Lenovo is seen as being in a better position than the other manufacturers to close the gap due to its Android tablets, although those aren’t actually selling like hotcakes.
Tablets on the whole accounted for 22% of all PC shipments in Q4 2011, with the Kindle Fire and Nook said to contribute to that growth.

Oscar Goldman, not bullshit. I have been in IT since February 1973 and the iPad is the MOST Personal Computer that I have ever owned. If you cannot bring yourself to call it a personal computer, then what is your definition of a personal computer? Where do you draw the line? No, an iPad is the MOST personal computing device that I have ever owned and it has replaced almost 95% of my laptop and desktop usage. I have worked on computers that filled a large house all the way down to the iPad. Where I draw the line is on how useful the computing device to be productive to produce useful work, and to be used for more than just media consumption. The basic screen size of an iPhone or smartphone is too small to be used for productive work, but an iPad can be used for productive work without attaching an additional screen. BTW, if a NetBook can be described as a computer, then an iPad is a PC.

Nope. A netbook has a hardware keyboard, the ability to run programs (not to mention OSes) unfettered, and has standard I/O capability.
Your whole distinction is based on screen size. So what's the magic number at which a phone meets your criterion for being a PC? Five inches? Seven?

LikeTimothy G Beckner Sorry mate an iPad is a PC? What are you smoking! This is the most ridiculous link bait blog post I've seen for months. I can't install the business software I wan't and need to use on an iPad. I can't install professional video encoding and editing software. I can't install real games on it. I can go on and on and on......and by the way take a look at all the research on what people use iPad's for, nothing like what they use a PC or Laptop for....

Are you speaking of all this old crappies I/O like RS232, Parallel ports, ... ? Can you install professionnal video editing tools on a netbook ? Can you install real games on a netbook ? Do you realize that the tablet hardware is much powerful than the one in netbooks ?
Do you have really used a tablet ?

LikeAbsolute bullshit, because it counts iPads as computers. The iPad is not a personal computer any more than the iPhone is. They run the same OS and have the same UI and I/O capabilities, so why aren't iPhones counted?

I think apple just happens to be the first to view what goes on at Shenzen, China, industrial labor that is. I'm pretty sure a ton, and I mean a ton of tech companies do the same, even far far worse than at Foxconn, only time can tell before Silicon Valley and the tech industry's closet will soon unveil.
Yes, because the laptop or desktop you are using to make snarky remarks was totally, 100% made in the US or EU by people being paid fair wages and having contracts with full benefits... Seriously!
They are not the only company producing products overseas that we all buy and there-fore support!
...and the number one employer of slave labor!!! Yay.....way to support inhuman work conditions to look smart in a coffee shop.
