Apple releases OS X 10.6.8, prepares Macs for Lion

Apple releases OS X 10.6.8, prepares Macs for Lion

Apple has released an update to OS X, bringing it to version 10.6.8, reports The Loop. This update is available through software update or directly from Apple’s website. The updates to OS X include enhancements to the Mac App Store to prepare for upgrades to OS X Lion. It also addresses ‘known variants’ of Mac Defender.

The 10.6.8 update is recommended for all users running Mac OS X Snow Leopard and includes general operating system fixes that enhance the stability, compatibility, and security of your Mac, including fixes that:

Enhance the Mac App Store to get your Mac ready to upgrade to Mac OS X Lion
Resolve an issue that may cause Preview to unexpectedly quit
    Improve support for IPv6
    Improve VPN reliability
Identify and remove known variants of Mac Defender

Updates to the Mac App Store make sense as Apple has stated that this is the only way that users will be able to purchase and install OS X Lion. An interesting tidbit from this update is that Apple seems to be referring to Lion as ‘Mac OS X Lion’ again, even though throughout the banners and materials relating to WWDC, it stuck with the simplified ‘OS X Lion’, leading many to believe that the company would be moving away from the Mac.

You can download the update directly using the links that follow or visit Software Update to snag the new version.
