White hat or black hat? iPhone password cracker rears its head.

White hat or black hat? iPhone password cracker rears its head.

According to The Register, a Russian password-cracking company has figured out a way to sniff out iPhone passwords without having to jailbreak the device.

While this could be great news for good use, the implications are somewhat scary as well. Given all of the information that we tend to store on our phones, we often forget that they are simply little computers and thus susceptible to vulnerabilities such as this.

ElcomSoft, the company behind the cracker, claims to be able to recover the password chains for the iPhone 4 “by extracting the password used to encrypt an iPhone keychain once it has been backed up on a computer hard drive”.

Anyone want to start placing bets on how long it takes for the first misuse of this software to happen? Might want to mind your nosey roommate one your next business trip.
