Update: iOS4 has launched, and you don’t need to hack anymore to get it! Head here to get the details to get started. Have fun everyone!
Want to get a crack at that iOS4 goodness that Steve Jobs graced us with just yesterday, but don’t have the developer account that you need? We have good news, you can get your hands dirty now thanks to the powers of the internet.
The only problem is this, you need a Mac to pull off what we are about to describe. If you do have a OS X machine, read on. Why the Mac component? iTunes 9.2 is required, and as it stands that iTunes build is Mac only. Sorry Windows users, step aside.
You do not need your UDID to execute the installation, which means that Apple should not (no promises) be able to nail you against the wall for doing what we are about to walk you through.
Guide:
1. To commence, download and install iTunes 9.2 (Mac only, download links here, here, or here).
2. Now you need to download the right gold master for your device and save it on your desktop:
- If you have an iPhone 3GS, download this.
- If you have an iPhone 3G, this one is for you.
- iPod Touch 3G, get yours here.
- And finally if you have the iPod Touch 2G, download this.
3. Now let’s actually install iOS4:
- Plug in your iOS device, and then tab over to iTunes.
- In iTunes, alt+click on the ‘restore’ button, and then when promoted to locate the file select the IPSW file we just moved to your desktop.
- Wait for between 10 and 15 minutes for the new OS to be moved over.
All Done. How cool is that?
A few warnings, this is a hack, so if something goes wrong do not come crying to us about it. If Apple gets mad at you, we warned you. Finally, have fun. The real version of iOS4 is scheduled to drop for the public on June 21st, but who wants to wait that long?
A special thanks to GumballTech for doing all the legwork.

Works for me! And its looking damn nice!
Has anyone had any problems with this on their iphone?
loading it now. Will let you know
All done. 10 mins. No problems. Beautiful!!
no probs
NO problems. it works 100%.
Works good. Multi tasking is great! Only thing i cant do is set the home screen image. Other then that works great!
http://yfrog.com/5czvhj settings>wall paper should do the trick.
It looks mighty fine here, even feels faster or is that just me?
When I do that. I dont have the option.
downloading the files now … hope it goes ok , I dont wanna get screwed!!
I’m trying to do this on my iPhone 3G and when I try to do the restore it has an error telling me the firmware is not compatible. Any ideas?
PC or Mac?
Mac
Try it again. Worked fine on my gf 3G. I have the 3Gs so we will see.
You need to make sure you are using the correct version (3G)/(3GS)
same for me on my ipod touch 2g are you using leopard ????
I downloaded and ran the itunes 9.2 beta…
i tried to restore the iphone, it never asked me for the ipsw file .. and the phone is restored to the normal 3.1.3 os…
any help is appreciated.
Press and hold Option and click restore
Aly, you have to alt-click the restore button “alt+click on the ‘restore’ button, and then when promoted to locate the file select the IPSW file we just moved to your desktop.”
thanks …. I guess i skipped that when i first read the article …. now installing …… !!! thanks everyone!
Works GREAAAAAAAATTTT
question is this illegal/
Will it erase all my photos on my Iphone?
Installed itunes 9.2 and went to do a backup of my iphone before installing the new stuff. Sync didn’t work and i get this message:
http://cl.ly/bfc0dc20daa0cfefa698
When i hit OK it stops syncing so i did a restore to the 3.1.2 and it still gives me that message when i plug in the iphone to sync though if i don’t hit OK it continues to sync.
Can’t downgrade to itunes 9.1. stuck. blargh. toooo greedy
Worked great guys thanks!!!!
Did this on my 3GS, everything is great except I lost all the pictures in my “Camera Roll”. Even though I backed up before the upgrade, and restored from the backup.
multi tasking isn’t working for me.
If your using anything other then a 3GS it won’t work.
I dont know if anyone else is having this issue but my iphone wont restore and keeps freezing close to the end. I tried everything meaning to run in dfu mode, and even try to restore in regular 3.1.3. Hopefully I can find a fix maybe downgrade and upgrade the Itunes should work.
Multi-tasking isn’t working for me either. Everything else seems OK.
If your on anything other then a 3GS it won’t work.
OK. Found the answer. There are no apps that support multitasking available yet. This is the GM version and not the one that will be released later this month. I guess I’ll have to wait for the apps.
Safari made a multitasking move when I clicked a link in another app.
Do we have iBooks yet? Can’t see it.
Works like a charm!
In the scenario that something goes wrong,
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to make sure I can restore my device back to OS 3?
I would hate to brick it or something.
Also, does anyone know the implications for when the public release of 4.0 comes out? What will happen then? Will it say there’s an update available?
Thanks!
I installed Itunes 9.2 and have some questions. Itunes show on device, there is an newer Version for ipod ava. (Version 8.8.8.) but i dont have an iPod , just an iPhone 3G. Also i click on, alt and restore – but itunes do nothing. Itunes are installed 3er time, same Problem..
Same here. 8.8.8.
Ok, its work, i did it via DFU Mode, and now the Backup runs. :-)
Works great on 3GS
thanks
Installed iTunes 9.2 on my MacBook Pro running Snow Leopard and then iOS4 on my 2G iPod Touch. Installation was smooth and easy.
The option for custom wall paper isn’t available however the new app folders are and work fine. Also now have a new ‘Game Centre’ app icon which doesn’t seem to have full functionality yet.
Earlier I was experiencing an issue where a random app icon would temporarily disappear, only to reappear soon after. Seems to have sorted itself now.
Hey I get error 21 when I try this… Need help Please!
would this upgrade work on my 3gs jailbroken iphone???Plz help Thanx
It will work. But you will lose your jailbreak apps because there is no official jailbreak for iOS4 yet.
I keep getting error 21 no matter what I do. I have a 3gs with the new boot rom.
How anyone run into an issue when restoring back to 3.1.3?
Good question. Has anyone tried restoring back to 3.1.3 AFTER they’ve successfully installed 4.0? Could someone try it?
mobileinstall patch for iOS4?
Lost my images in Camera roll too! Odd! (iOS 4 on iPhone 3G) Any suggestions?
This version is already jailbreaked???????? If not, how can I jailbreak this version?
BE CAREFUL: Tried it on a O2 UK iPhone and after installing iOS 4 the phone ask me to unlock the phone with a none locked SIM card, which, obviously I haven’t.
Had to go back to 3.1.3. in DFU mode.
What is DFU mode?
look on the the web : http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=1034
So, in what scenario would I need to do this?
EDIT: A weird thing happenned while downloading 3.1.3 from Apple, the phone ( still connected to the computer) relaunched, and lanched the iOS 4.
So Be patient even if the phone ask for activation. wait and it will work !
I met 8.8.8 too, then I just put the phone into recovery mode, use the option + recovery to choose the firmware. wait…. and done.
Works well
So does multi task work with a 3G?
People are saying its just because the apps don’t support it?
If Apple never intended for V4 to be used on a 3G, who would have created a special version for 3G without multi task?
Worked good for me, except I can’t seem to change my Home Screen wallpaper on my 3G.
what is the alt+click
Alt click on restore to restore from a custom IPSW.
Just a note: Multitasking, home screen wallpaper, and battery percentage are all features in iOS 4 that won’t be on the iPhone 3G.
But, you can jailbreak while running iOS4 on a 3G. Just go find out how.
What about the 3GS?
Anyone tried this on a 3rd gen iPod Touch yet?
I have it on a third gen touch and seems to work pretty well. I cannot get the location feature to work, which is not a big deal for me, and I have a few places where I have to fill forms that is not working right.
It keeps all your data installed, correct? Or do you need to use a backup after you install iOS 4?
I believe you have to use a backup. I had to, but I don’t do this that often so I don’t know all the in’s and outs.
Ok. Do you know (or anyone else reading) if anything doesn’t get backed up, or does it back up everything? Like does stuff inside apps (accounts, data, etc)?
Thanks
anyone knows what language packages are supported?
i wanted to do the update right now but the that aspect came to my mind.
is it just english?
what if i make the update now?
can i also make the “legal” update over that one or do i have to restore the phone or downgrade it?
cheers
berni
Hey if I update my phone using iTunes 9.2 on my girlfriend’s mac… make a backup first, and then go back and plug the phone into my PC which has itunes 9.1.1 will I by able to sync still? or once I go 4.0, I wont be able to sync anymore? anyone know the answer? In other words, is the 9.2 only required to update the firmware, or is it required for syncing as well? thanks
hey fellas,
i found out something really great!
i normally use iTunes on Windows – so all my contacts, apps and co are saved here. now i made the update to iOS4 with my 3GS on my macbook pro (never used my iPhone on it)
i made the update…it got restored.
it worked. i now have iOS4 with all the nice stuff like “folders” “multitasking” “intelligent mail” (i now can receive more than 50 mails at once ^^) and (ok it may sound funny buuut) it looks much sharper. maybe i now have a retina display? xDDP
ok, update worked.
it’s also available in ALL languages (english, german, spain, french, espanol…)
but: i lost all my contacts and was really sad
luckily i made a backup on windows before, where i had all my contacts, SMS, mails and so on.
what did i do now?
i created a backup from the “new” phone on the mac, so that i have the path (remember, i never used the iPhone on this mac before, so there hasn’t been a backup folder yet) to the backup in the “application support/mobileSync” folder
Now: i went to my windows pc, copied the backup (including all the contacts etc) and just EXCHANGED the backups
Then i did the update to the new iOS4 a second time, and when the phone was restored iTunes asked “set up a new phone” or “create one from a backup”
I clicked “backup” and it got restored WITH iOS4 + WITH all my settings, pictures and so on! (the only stuff i now lost are my apps i downloaded, because they arn’t on the mac already…but i just need my contacts for the next two weeks and then i’ll get the “legal” update anyway ^^)
the gag is,
the phone now also runs on windows WITH iOS4
may i should try to restore the backup NOW and get the apps too?
guess it won’t work because of the alt+click restore which supports only macs
hope i could help someone
important notes: works fine on the 3GS, supports nice features AND it’s multilingual!!
give it a try
if it won’t work just restore from backup and everything’s fine again
have a nice evening guys!
cheers from austria
berni
ok, there was something magical going on
the first time i connected the phone it worked
now windows comes up with the iTunes 9.2 and that is still not available for win.
damn =(
but: iOS4 is still great! =)
I want to know something. Can someone please help? Will this Un-Jailbreak the previous version? As in do I need to download everything again via Cydia or Rock again and will I lose my Photos or Cycorder Videos? I have a Iphone 3G 8g and am very happy with all my stuff on it now, finally when I though my Iphone is near perfect, this comes along. I use backgrounder for multitasking but really want to try the Multi-tasking. Can anyone help me please? Thanks.
To answer your question; Yes, it will “un-jailbreak” you iPhone.
Also, multitasking in iOS 4 is not available on the iPhone 3G, only the 3GS. So if that is all you want to lose then you might want to consider waiting for the public release.
However, I believe there IS a jailbreak for iOS 4 already floating around somewhere..
Thanks so much for the information :)
meh.. I decided to wait another 2 weeks for the official. didn’t want to muck around with trying to restore my contacts & apps on the pc.
If you download the iOS 4 and then restore your phone a second time, does it revert back to the older OS?
Does anybody know anything on a jailbreak or unlock for an iPhone 3G looking to run the iOS4 GM? Thanks!
I tried restoring my 3rd Gen iPod touch with the correct file, but I got an error saying the device could not be restored because the firmware file is not compatible? Can anyone help? What’s wrong?..
Kinda bummed that I restored a perfectly beautiful jailbroken 3G essentially so I could have folders. But I do like the unified mailbox, I was just somehow hoping above all hopes that I would still be able to multitask. How come there’s not home screen wallpaper? I was looking forward to that too.
This thing is lightning fast though, much much faster than when it was
jailbroken.
Aside from that, everything works perfectly (knock-on-wood) and all of my apps were there, contacts, photos and everything. iTunes gives you the option to restore the info from an older backup or to set up a new iPhone.
it downloaded and installed fine on my 3 gen ipod touch. I got the wallpapers feature, my itunes says 4.0, my tab under general says 4.0 but I do not get the folders feature that I wanted the most. What could I have been missing or done wrong? After I hit restore it asks if I want to use my previous back up. I said yes, should I have said no and started from a fresh install? Not so worried about losing much on a touch.
Hey mike, could you tell me where you got the ipsw file that you used to restore from? I have a 3rd gen touch as well but can’t seem to get mine to work..
Did you use the one from the link in this article?
I
I did use the one in this article,it worked perfectly and easily. I was not worried at all about losing anything since only ipod and I could restore.
I followed all and it works. My questions was why I did not see folders. I found out you have to make them actually. If you highlight an icon until it wiggles and slide onto the top of another similar icon it will make a folder. It is great!! plus im ordering a 32 gig black Iphone 4 on the 15th anyway so this is just a teaser.
I also had a problem with my 3rd Gen iPod Touch. None of my downloaded apps are showing up. Any ideas?
Update on my downloaded apps not installing on my iPod when I upgraded: Make sure you turn off any restrictions when you upgrade. I had restricted downloading new apps and that seem to mess up the upgrade. Once I turned off all restrictions, my apps showed up. No apple wallpaper though, but my photo’s show up.
Please say whether there is any significant improvement in wifi signal reception. 3gs on 3.1.2 sucks..please chek and post a.s.a.p.
Mike, Just drag one app on top of another app & thats how you create a folder.
Hi. I have iPhone 3GS Locked with baseband 05.12.01
I was waiting for an unlock. My question:
If I do the upgrade, etc. here displayed, will I be able to unLock my iPhone 3GS?
Don’t install this!!!
I agree you should find a custom 4.0 download where it saves everything, This was my mistake and now I might have to wait for the next jailbrake
Had a couple of scares during the install as it did a few weird things just before the software started to load. Otherwise it installed in just about 10 minutes. Had to re-synch all apps, music, & contacts as all of that didn’t transfer over. Also it said that it would be reporting to Apple and I don’t know what that was about. Can Apple see the hack being installed on each iPhone? Just wondering, anybody know?
Well now that I’m getting one to not have errors, I got the same message.
“iTunes will erase and restore your iPod to iPhone OS 4.0 software and will verify the restore with Apple.”
Strange. Well, if you still went for it, I guess I will, too! Here goes..
I just hope I don’t lose any important data…
Wish me luck!
Yes that made me nervous too but the upgrade went off without hitch with the exception of I lost all of my contacts. Everything else was there. Thank God I have MobileMe!
works fine with my iphone 3g, but itunes 9.2 seems to hate my 80gb ipod classic. every time i plug in the ipod, itunes freezes within a few seconds. after about 5 different force quits, i gave up. tomorrow i will plug the ipod into my old ibook g4 and restore it, then try again to get it to work with my imac and itunes 9.2
Wordked flawlessly on an iPhone 3G in Canada, thanks a lot… Cheers!
Multi-task not working right?…for me. Double-tap the home button right? When I double-tap, it just closes the program like it used to.
Errr, I just watched the iphone 4 video and at the end it shows that only the 3GS works with the multi-tasking feature. That sucks. Everything else seems to be working fine. Thanks for the tip!
Does anyone else not have any of the default wallpapers?.. I was hoping to use those, but when I got to Wallpaper > click the image of both screens > Wallpaper, there is nothing in the folder. My Saved Photos are there, however.
Anyone know where I could get the defaults of iOS 4?
Yeah, no wallpapers here either. :(
I know! I’m really kinda disappointed! I was looking forward to using them… :(
If you go into Settings->Wallpaper you will see the ones Apple includes, even the water droplet one.
Ya, I tried that before but it’s empty. :/
Yeah I don’t have them either. They’ll probably include them in the public release.
If you go into Settings->Wallpaper you will see the ones Apple includes, even the water droplet and the slate ones. You will not see them in your pictures folder.
Not for us… What device do you have, Russ?
Yeah I can’t seem to get multitasking to work either tried it with taptap and tom-tom like they showed in the video. Still no luck. Wondering if it because it’s jailbroken. Everything else works fine. On iPhone 3GS.
Multitasking will only work with the default apps until the developers make updates that allow them to be used in multitasking. So we’re just going to have to wait like everyone else to multitask with 3rd party apps.
Works fine with all my 3rd party apps on a 3GS
How did you get them to install ? mine are in itunes !
Thanks!
Oh ok I see now. I thought there was something wrong about the one I installed. Lol. I was trying all different apps and games. So take it that the TomTom and TapTap app they showed with multitasking hasn’t publicly been released yet.
Less then 10 minutes to install… Multitasking not working either… Compas frozen, otherwise all perfectly fine
Got the iTunes 9.2 download okay, however when following your link “If you have an iPhone 3GS, download this”, waiting the required 45 sec for the freebie, there then was no button to actually start the download. It just kept sending me in circles, back to the beginning. Any other free link available for the 3GS?
So if i install this, i wont have to update when iOS4 is actually out, right?
duh
WORKED GREAT! I LOVE IT. CAN’T WAIT TO GET A WHITE IPHONE4!
Installed it yesterday everything seems fine (3GS) wallpaper, zoom on camera, multitasking, I swear the battery life drains way faster even with closing open apps. Does anyone recommend doing a restore to the “official” release version on the 21st? or is that even a concern?
Yes, you should do an official restore as some features may not be included in the GM, such as wallpapers and the iBooks application, etc.
Ok so if I do this on the 21st will I still be able to install the actual ios 4?
Good question, I; d like to know that too :)
Does restoring to iOS4 clear everything that’s currently on the device? Or just update the software?
I will clear Apps, Music, and Videos.
You should backup your device first.
And then you will have to re-sync Apps, Music, and Videos.
Can i use this if I have a jailbroken phone and Im using T-mobile?
no.. dumbhead.. it will unjailbreak it… and using tmobile prolly means it’s unlocked not jailbroken
My brother put it on his iPhone 3G and lost all his pictures and he synced it to his macbook pro right before he had done it. Also he can set the different wallpapers. Any suggestions to help him out? My iPhone 3Gs is working GREAT with 4.0 software.
He can’t set different wallpapers… sry about that.
if i do it can i go back to 3.1.3?
Will I be able to rejailbreak my 3GS after it is unjailbroken once I have iOS4?
Oh oh, what happened Julio?
This won’t work on the 1st-gen iPod touch right? it’d be nice if it did =\
maybe julio is moron… lol
Works like a charm in my 3GS!! Tnx a lot for the tip!!!
Regards from Mexico!!!
Does anyone know if you can rejailbreak the iPhone once a new jailbreak comes out??
Worked beautifully for me on my 3gs.
Thank you!
You can also alt-click “Check for Updates” and it will update the software so you don’t have to do a full restore. Worked flawlessly for me.
It’s ctrl-click you idiot
Worked great with my iPhone 3g but i didn’t get the home screen wall paper.
Duh.. it only works on 3Gs learn how to read
for some reason I get an error message (code is 11) and it says it can’t install on my iphone 3G.
Todo bien en mi 3gs, solo falta esperar que actualizen algunas apps para ser compatibles en su totalidad con el multitasking…
No Multitasking with either Pandora or JustinTV
Are you kidding me WTF
You’ll have to wait for the app updates in order for apps to multitask buddy.
Buen trabajo, funciona perfectamente, para que funcione el multi tareas y poder cambiar los fondos requieren usar el RedSnow 0.9.5b5 y también podrán hacerle jailbreak
saludos
Good job, works perfectly, to run the multi-tasking and able to change the wall paper required to use the redsnow 0.9.5b5 and may also make jailbreak
From Mexico
Ive installed this on my 3G Iphone. No issues, Very straight forward. Everything works apart from wallpapers, multitasking which i expected anyway. iBooks wont install? Any ideas? Apart from that everythings great!
Disappointed. There are NO:
-iBooks
-Battery Percentage
-Wallpapers (home screen)
-Multitasking
This firmware is not what you think it is.
Installed on 2 x 3GS in Dublin. Works perfectly (including wallpapers). Thanks for the advice.
Yep this works 100% on my 3GS. AWSOME STUFF
i’m trying to install build 8A293 for the touch 2G
but everytime i do it wants to verify.
call me paranoid but yeah. not sure whether to continue?
any hints??
My photos in photo.app are blurred otherwise it’ll works 100% for me.
if I do this on the 21st will I still be able to install the actual ios 4?
i tried this is windows (yes i know it said try on a mac) but anyways i got error 13 after it verifies with apple… error 13 means its a usb issue… id also heard you can use it with an older version of itunes just you dont have folder management… also i have a late 2009 (3rd gen) 8gb ipod touch but only the 2nd gen starts to appear to work… any ideas???
Sorry to say, Adam, but there is no such thing as a 3rd Generation 8 GB iPod Touch. Only the 32GB and 64GB capacities are 3rd Generation. It is a common misconception that the 8GB was also updated, but it was not. So you will have to use the 2nd Generation install. Sorry, man.
So you
Ignore that “So you” at the end. Not sure why that’s there.
you’re an idiot. you have to have itunes 9.2. duh. and itunes 9.2 is only available as .app not .exe. idiot
Has anyone had a problem with the recent calls and missed calls on the iPhone 3GS !
I had deleted my recent calls and haven’t seen any show up since, anyone else?
I knew rhe hardware wasn’t updated :( i thought it was considered 3rd gen since it came with 3.0 software… also does anyone know if the “newer” (is that right now?) 8gb have the n wifi chip of it’s 32 & 64 counterparts??? Cause all of the other iPod touches and iPhones seem to I’ve it and I hope ios4 fixes some stuff… My iPod doesnot like my wifi at all… :(
You’re an idiot.. hardware doesn’t get updated…
works on iphone 3gs, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. But i cant see iBooks. Is it supposed to be in the first place?
Do you not know how to read you idiot? This isn’t iOS4, it’s a beta. meaning it’s glitchy and it doesn’t have all the features yet. iBooks isn’t released until the real iOS4 is. moron
okay the trolls have arrived
Yep. Funnily enough, they’re calling others “idiots” yet don’t know what they’re talking about themselves. Which is usually the case. :P
To everyone saying “WTF?!? No MuLTIAskING?! no HOME ScrEEN WALLPapzer?! No PANDORGAA!!!!”
Do your homework. If you have a 3G or an older iPod touch, multitasking and homescreen wallpaper will not work for you. If that’s important, just wait and get the iPhone 4. Don’t download the iOS4 right now because it’s not going to have those upgrades for you.
Take 3 seconds to read before you troll the boards
all works for me, i have 3GS
multitasking = works
Folders = works
Geotagging = works
background = works
email threading and unifide inbox = works
camera zoom = works
the only problem i have is that my iPod crashes everytime i load it in my 3GS but all work and including the iPod on my girlfriends 3GS –
anyone else has an issue like mine?
I have the same experience as “the Man” above, but instead of the iPod app crashing, it is 2Do app that crashes on load. Also, AirVideo app has lost the ability to use the video-out port via composite cable.
P.S. TheNextWeb’s Twitter sign-in functionality is borked for me (Safari 5 Mac). First time took me thru the correct “allow Twitter” procedure, but then all NextWeb pages were blank until I cleared my cookies.
I got the -9807 error … With a 3G … I already tried the apple help… but its worthless… someone help me pls !
Somebody can tell me ,can I use IOS4 , My 3GS is 3.0.1 (7A400)
thanks very much !
Still now i didn’t use MAC but in future i am planning to do? That’s time i will try this trick.
Do you have to have Wifi off during the installation of either iTunes 9.2 or IOS 4?
This Will upgrade my Baseband?
I just downgraded back to 3.1.3 had issues with the phone not registering my missed and recent calls , so I downgraded got back my cydia and the chains are off me again LOL
this is just the jailbreak…but not the unlock….so you wont be able to make calls with any carrier.
can do on pc now
just download 9.2 :)
Works good on windows now that iTunes 9.2 is out.
Oh and use Shift+ Click Restore for windows.
it’s work for me
thanks
If this is a “restore” will you have to re-download your apps, ringtones, etc..?
I get an error message saying it needs to contact the server after extracting….. And can’t.
I get the same error…
i did it on windows with 9.2, it restored fine except my wifi wont work!!! it finds the network and connects to it but i cant get an internet connection!!! could it be the mac filtering on my router and the update changed the mac address? any other ideas? (ive already rebooted it renewed lease and turned wifi off and on… it has a definite network connection though because i can connect to itunes using the remote app)
try this: turn off ur wifi and then reboot it with the wifi off then turn it on and put wifi on it should works
also ibooks store isnt there is that supposed to happen???
Worked for me with Ipod Touch and Windows, had to re-sync and install everything but ios4 working well. They need some multitasking Apps though.
worked w/vista+itunes 9.2…this is a restore…wipes-out everything!!!
Freak! I did it and t’s awesome. iPod touch 2g. I restores and innate my settings. But no apps or any content! please help! Thanks.
Restored and i have my settings. No apps or music Or videos. Or photos. ** sry.
would i have any problems once the final upgrade becomes available
iOS4 should become available at some point today, but you’ll probably have to downgrade to 3.1.3 first as it will not recognize your iphone as having a previous version (it still says 4.0)
Also I downloaded 9.2 from here first, but replaced it with the official release version. Maybe it will tell you there’s an update available for your iPhone, even if you have the golden master beta.
Do u need the official version to get iBooks or has apple just not put it on the app store yet because I can only find the iPad only version… Also if you have this version and try to update it it says this version (4.0) is the current version so yes you would have to downgrade first meaning u probably will lose all your folders and stuff :(
iBooks isn’t out for iPhone yet. You will lose your maps when you downgrade but be sure to put one map per space so you don’t have to reorganise when you update again.
how do you downgrade to 3.1.3
Make sure you back up your phone by right-clicking the name in the left menu bar under devices BEFORE you restore it with a downloaded IPSW.
you download the IPSW for iOS 3.1.3 and in iTunes you either alt+click (mac) or ctrl+click (windows) to restore from a file on your computer, it will then control and restore your phone.
I’d wait and see if you can just update the phone or if you have to restore when you know for certain the update is available (10am PST) (8pm EST)
ok i restored my ipod touch 2nd gen back to 3.1.3 it said the backup i just made was made with a newer version of the os so i would have to set it up as a new ipod and then update it so i went and tried to update it but it said that 3.1.3 is the current version!!!
Then wait till te new version is out.
I told you all you should wait and see if you can just update when it comes out before you backup, downgrade, restore, resync and then update again… Mine is still iOS4 and I’ll keep you posted if I can just update to the new iOS4
wasnt the new official version supposed to come out today??? anyways it doesnt matter i got it back 4.0 after another restore, also i was wondering why shift + update (windows) doesnt work though… it comes up with an access apple sever (error 3002) for me… any ideas??? or does that just never work lol
@ Dutchster No news yet about trying to update from the GM to the official release? Or is it not yet available?
It’s not available yet. 1hr and 15min. To go.
It’s available. Some of my friends are installing it right now. It doesn’t show up with me when I click the ‘Check for updates’ button. Think a downgrade to 3.1.3 is necessary?
Does anyone know? Will I lose my jailbreak on my jailbroken iPhone 3GS 1.3.1 when I upgrade to OS4?
Thanks
yeah i suggest manually backing up your ipod/iphone backup because downgrading and restoring it to 3.x may delete your backup http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1414 under restoring an ipod/iphone/ipad it tells you the location of ur backup copy all folders and files under that directory to another location, i think you can just paste the files back and restart itunes, you might have to restore ur ipod/iphone from the 4.0 u just downloaded and then select a backup… idk havent tried this yet still downloading 4.0 just heads up and ill tell you guys how it goes once its done
I tried, it’s necessary to restore first, you don’t have to downgrade. Make a back up though. After the restore it just says there’s an update available and if you press ok, you download and install automatically. Restore from back up and you’re all set!
One question to you all. I noticed earlier that the iPod icon is in the multitasking bar when listening to music, but it’s also next to the iPod controls. Can I switch it off (make it invisible in the multitasking bar)?
well i wished i known that!!! i tried it before on mine and it wouldnt update… now its having trouble restoring from my 4.0 GM backups i might have to restore back to 3.1 and restore from that backup… >:(
ok it does work i successfully restored from the backup of a backup by putting it into recovery mode and then i used one back instead of the newest backup, it took a heck of a long time but it worked, probably a good idea to do this if you want to jailbreak it too, or if you just want to keep long term backups of ur ipod/iphone
hey what happened to the game center i cant seem to find it on my ipod now
Yeah I just realized that. It’s not released for users yet. Not that you’d be able to use it anyway cos apps haven’t integrated it in the latest updates.
Also my iPod touch doesn’t have a wallpaper behind my apps. I hadn’t put ios4 on it before.
Thanks a bunch or the tip! glad that the solution is also officially there!
I don’t have faces on mine. I tried restore after the ios4 release but this didn’t fix it. Anyone have any ideas??

I got an error message
so I did not install that yet
Hi there … very good article – more helpful than what’s on the Apple website.
The iOS4 update does take a while – so be prepared for a couple of hours worth of downtime, possibly more.
