With the recent revelations that Twitter have plans to monetize the service in the coming year, it’s pretty much anyone’s guess as to how they’re going to do it.
Biz Stone, Twitters Co-Founder, recently spoke of premium accounts which would be aimed at businesses and offer various features to gain an insight to their followers trends along with providing an analytical aspect.
However, the latest speculation is that advertisements may be coming to Twitter. If you’ve logged in to Twitter recently (from the web interface that is), you may have noticed some space has been added at the very bottom of your stream, just where the ‘More…’ button is.
Currently, as you can see there is a nice little mobile notification there but don’t you think it would be a nice place to put an advert or two? Sure, it might be a little odd that they’d put banners at the very bottom of a page, I mean CTR won’t be that great but it’d be a good way of introducing them, at least?
Like I said above, everything is guess-work for the moment but it’s a possibility. I’ll be watching that spot over the coming months to see if it becomes anything more than a notification. What are your thoughts? We’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments below!

Nice sir. Technology is geared with innovations, so anything is possible!
I’m probably in the minority here, I have no problem with Twitter placing ads on their site, or even in the feed. I find Twitter useful, I’m thrilled that the service is offered free of charge. If they want to place ads in an effort to keep the service free, that’s fine by me. I don’t click on many ads online anyway, so I’ll be affected minimally.
If they do add ads, I’d even be happy with a monthly charge to remove the ads from the site/feed.
When a service is good, I am happy to pay in order to keep that service around.
I had the same thought, Twitter Ads just popped up into my mind once I’ve seen this little notification. Well, let’s wait and see
Tweetie put ads in their app, they’re good quality ones as well and I do find them relevant most of the time. Of course, twitter would be able to give you the most relevant ads ever, but also offering a premium service is something I’m willing to pay for, akin to Spotify (which I already pay for as well).
If it keeps the service free to most users then its a great idea! No problem for me particularly if there is an option to remove them for a small fee (Grooveshark anyone?)
It strikes me they could target the ads to users reasonably well too!
I think it would be cool if the twitter use got to sort of manage the ads that were on their account.
For example: say ever twitter account has to have a minimum of 2 ads on their sight, but they can have as many as they want. So if they support a company, they volunteer to advertise for them. While every company that has an Ad on twitter would have to pay a monthly fee or pay-per-click.
This way tweeters would still have say in the matter ad social media would be even more important for advertising.
This would also encourage companies to “compete for tweets”
What do others think about this?
