Tweetmeme takes in half of 3rd-party Twitter traffic

Tweetmeme takes in half of 3rd party Twitter trafficWith this new monthly series we’ll provide you with the ins and outs of the twitter-third-party-scene. Who is scoring best? Who are the newcomers? Who are the losers?

The 3rd party Arena has proven to be a very tough environment to survive in. Our list has no mercy and sweeps out any party that isn’t original or the best at what it does. We count traffic and if you don’t have enough, you disappear below the fold.

With around 130 competitors let’s see who who survived another twitter month:

The arena has grown more vicious: monthly traffic rose with 17,13% (5,498,982) from 32,102,837 to 37,601,810 accumulated uniques.

Tweetmeme is placed firmly in the first place and even grew from 44,39% to an amazing 48,52% of the total traffic.

Moving up in the ranks: peoplebrowsr.com! It rises 44 places and enters the top 10 with a growth of 1722%.

It is closely followed by bakertweet.com on the 37th place with 605,22% in growth.

Nambu.com is the biggest loser this month. It dropped 87% to 3,591 uniques a month. Get back up Nambu.com!

Tinker.com kicked out Twittercounter.com from the top 5, with a spectacular growth of 557,88%. (disclosure: we are involved with twittercounter.com).

Tinker.com grew from a mere 159,825 uniques to more than 1 million uniques within one month.

Also for the first time since twitter history the top 5 consists only of services with more than 1 million unique visitors per month:Tweetmeme takes in half of 3rd party Twitter traffic

We have 5 newcomers in the Top 25: peoplebrowsr.com, retweet.com, twtpoll.com, twitscoop.com and powertwitter.me

We’ve also noticed that all of the picture sharing sites have dropped in visitors counts. Twitpic, Yfrog and Mobypicture all lost traffic. Is this a temporary phenomena or is there something fundamentaly wrong with picture sharing on twitter?

These numbers are based on the results of compete.com. We are aware of the fact that these numbers are not always 100% accurate. If you have ideas or suggestions on how to improve this series or for services that are missing please tweet me @nicolasmertens

  • This really doesn't make much sense to me. You are mixing in Twitter clients with web based Twitter services, directories, and link shortening.

For the Twitter clients you need to take a look at the daily API usage stats here:
    http://twitstat.com/twitterclientusers.html

For example, TweetDeck should be #1 on this list. How many people use TweetDeck daily but have never actually gone back to TweetDeck.com since they first downloaded it.

Bit.ly and TinyURL are used daily by thousands of people who are not even members of Twitter.

And how is Flickr ranked 21st? I just typed it in Compete and it receives 28,471,044 uniques per month.

If I'm totally lost here as to how you are ranking, I'm sorry. Maybe you're counting referrals to Twitter.com? I don't know.
  • Interesting that Titter and Twitpic are the only two in the Top 100 according to Quantcast.
  • I wonder if the drop off in Twitter-focused photo sharing site like Twitpic is due to Flickr, Tumblr, Posterous and other non-Twitter-only photo services integrating more Twitter support.
  • Based on real traffic data for a number of large site, you will probably find the Quantcast numbers for Tweetmeme a lot more accurate. 2.6M US, though that might be a little generous.
They are not quantified, but it isn't an order of magnitude off.

At least quoting Quantcast you place the onus on a wesite wanting people to write the truth about them.
  • where do you get this numbers ? if you get them from Compete, those reflect clicks on retweet buttons for Tweetmeme, for example, not visits to their page.
  • Hey Bernardo,
We are aware of the problem that comes with using the compete data (as we state in the article).
So data might be skewed or incomplete but it's the only available source for the moment.
