According to Google today marks the anniversary of the invention of the barcode.
In honor of that date (what date? Anybody knows?) they have changed their logo to the most minimalistic doodle ever.
Coming soon to a Google front page near you but available right now in Austriala and Taiwan.
UPDATE: Now live on all Google properties around the world.
Want to generate your own barcode too? Use the “Free Linear Barcode Image Generator“. Yes, our name in barcode on the right here:

Volgens de wiki pagina werd het patent voor de barcode toegekend op 7 oktober 1952. Vandaar dus… [nog 28 minuten ;-)]
“… The patent was issued on 7 October 1952…”

According to Wiki, the patent was issued on 7 October 1952 as US Patent 2,612,994
I’m not so much of a nerd as to say this is the case but I’m guessing that little barcode reads ‘Google’ to librarians and authors (:
Hmm…I can place a comment yet I don’t see any of the other comments. Strange?!
And now I see the other comments! I think I just entered the Twilight Zone.
Austriala…is that some place in Europe? or is the la at the end a shout out to the sound of music ;-)
Hey guess what if you had Android Phone you could scan that tag and know what it means!!!
I have seen this in Google Indonesia (google.co.id)
raw ass google doogle
Was it too hard to check wiki for the date??
